A short history of marble-shooter games
The marble shooter — sometimes called a "marble popper" or ball-shooting puzzle — did not start with Zuma. The mechanic of firing coloured balls into an advancing chain first appeared in Puzz Loop, an arcade game released by Mitchell Corporation in 1998 (later seen on consoles as Magnetica and Ballistic). It introduced the core loop every Zuma game still uses today: match three same-coloured balls before the chain reaches the exit.
The genre went mainstream in 2003 when PopCap released Zuma Deluxe. By swapping the abstract arcade look for a friendly Aztec-temple theme and a marble-spitting stone frog, PopCap turned a niche arcade idea into one of the most-played casual puzzle games of the decade. Its 2009 sequel, Zuma's Revenge!, added boss fights, a controllable frog and new stage types, and is still the benchmark many players measure clones against.
Zuma's success spawned a whole shelf of marble shooter games — Luxor (2005), Sparkle, Tumblebugs and dozens of browser remakes — each putting its own spin on the same satisfying chain-clearing rhythm. The move from desktop downloads to Flash, and then to HTML5, is what makes it possible to play the entire genre free in a browser today, with no install and no plug-in.
